Say YES More – It Might Get You More of What You Want!

I’ve been talking to my daughter recently about saying “yes” more. . .she is actually pretty good at it already. I have observed that she gets what she needs right in the nick of time, and I believe that is because she cooperates with her life, i.e., her goals, her mission and her wants. Things, people, opportunities arrive out of thin air and she welcomes all of it into her living room.

Our discussion about “always say yes,” occurred around a conversation about her friend that lost her home in a fire; my daughter’s generosity in giving the friend and her family a place to live for several months until their home could be replaced; her friend wanting to gift her with a generous amount of money to repay her; my daughters hesitancy around accepting the offer. When she told me about her discomfort, I said, “say yes. Always say yes!”

In that moment, she could see the event happening in her mind’s eye and it seemed to free her up. . . she did accept the money and she’s rolling along getting exactly what she needs right when she needs it!

Danny Wallaces book, Yes Man
tells a fabulous story of his year long experiment with saying “yes” more. He had some good times, and not so good times, but, the good that came into his life as a result of being more open and expanding into new areas far outweighed the not good ones, including winning a $48,000 lottery!

If you are lucky enough to still be working at a job, you might be looking for something to do in addition to your job so you can get back on track. I say that with all sincerity because I know from first hand experience, most of us have gotten off the track and many of us may think we’ll never get back on.

My son-in-law told me recently that his income has regressed back to eleven years ago. He and my daughter are hard working, diligent and creative. There’s no excuse for them to be losing ground except for the way they are adapting to what’s going on economically. Today, you just can’t rely on your job or your career path to gain an increase in annual income, let alone “go-to-hell money” – just in case, everything goes to hell!

The best way I heard it was from author, Richard Paul Evans in the Five Lessons a Millionaire Taught Me About Life and Wealth. Evans named an activity we might all take up as “winning in the margins” meaning, doing something in addition to our regular income producing activity.

Winning in the margins is a sleek way to describe generating extra cash flow. Much better than a second job because you’ll use your free time and brain power to attract revenue that can very possibly end up paying you more than the job you educated yourself for.

Winning in the margins can definitely speed up building your nest egg and reduce the time it could take to reach your financial goal if left to your career potential alone.

    J. Paul Getty, once named the richest man in the world by Fortune magazine, called this “the Millionaire Mentality”:

“The Millionaire Mentality watches costs and tries to reduce them—and strives to increase production and sales and thus profits.”

Back in those days Getty didn’t write his book for us ‘little people’. He wrote his book for other business magnates. Lucky for us, we get a glimpse inside a billionaire’s mind and can learn some of his tricks.
